All lessons are conducted in a structured way going through the DVSA syllabus, aiding theory knowledge and getting the best out of each individual.
Extended lessons for accelerated learning and deeper practice on complex driving manoeuvres.
My driving courses are available to learner drivers after an initial assessment drive which usually takes an hour. During this first lesson I judge the level of your driving and advise on the most suitable and cost effective course for you to reach the standard required to pass your driving test.

Hi, I'm John — a fully qualified DVSA approved driving instructor with over twenty years of experience helping nervous beginners and confident learners alike get safely on the road. My lessons are calm, structured and built around you, so you'll never feel rushed or pressured.

These Terms and Conditions are an important part of your driving tuition so please take time to read. I, John Nicholson, am the proprietor and representative of John Nicholson Driving School. All communication must be made prior to the start of each working day at 8am.
Prescribed drugs may have an impact on your ability to drive — therefore I must be informed. You must hold a current and valid driving licence which must be produced on your first driving lesson, and at regular intervals throughout your training. Any changes due to medical conditions or driving convictions must be communicated immediately. Please attend in suitable clothing and convenient footwear, and bring any appropriate glasses or contact lenses. If I think you are unfit to drive, the lesson will be cancelled and you will be charged. I cannot accept responsibility for any injury, loss or damage arising from a driving lesson.
Payments for single lessons are to be made at the beginning of each lesson in car, unless it is a block booking which requires a bank transfer when 2-hour slots are available. Cheques are not accepted. Block bookings must be paid for prior to the first lesson of that block. Refunds will not be given for block bookings, however hours paid for in advance will be available for a 12-week period from payment received — a special term for anyone suffering a serious injury. Any longer than 12 weeks with no tuition and the funds will be forfeited. Crash courses of 6+ hours require a minimum 1-week notice. Refunds incur a £30 admin fee. If a lesson payment is requested more than twice via text, on the 3rd request an invoice will be posted, incurring a £50 admin fee per letter.
All lessons offered must be confirmed via text or in the lesson. If the lesson is not confirmed you will be notified of cancellation and the lesson slot will be filled. This is to prevent wasted lesson slots and miscommunication.
48 hours (2 days) notice is required to cancel any driving lesson. If less than 48 hours notice is given, the full lesson fee must be paid. I waive this charge if you provide a doctor’s letter for sickness due to physical injury, e.g. broken bone. If you suspend pre-paid lessons for 12 weeks or more, remaining lessons will be forfeited. Crash courses (6+ hours in 1 week) require minimum 1 week notice or will be charged.
When passing your driving test it is standard for John Nicholson Driving School to post a picture on social media and use pictures of genuine passes for promotion — including online ads for marketing purposes.
I cannot be held responsible for any mechanical or electrical failure or illness which may cause prevention or termination of a lesson or driving test. If the weather is too severe, I can re-arrange your lesson free of charge based on a professional decision. If you cancel at short notice due to weather while conditions are suitable to drive, the lesson will be chargeable.
Your driving lesson will be on a one-to-one basis. If you would like a parent or friend to come along that can be arranged. You will always receive the full lesson time you have paid for. I am happy to start and finish your lesson from different locations, providing these are agreed at least one week in advance and both are within my usual working area.
Whenever you are driving in the school vehicle, you will be under close supervision. However, John Nicholson Driving School cannot be held responsible for any infringement of the law. Any fines incurred will be the responsibility of the driver.
I will make every effort to help you reach a good standard of driving that enables you to pass your test, and you must maintain regular lessons leading up to your test otherwise it may have to be moved back. In the interest of road safety I reserve the right to withdraw the use of my car for tests without prior notice should you prove unsafe or not up to test standard. All test bookings must be screenshotted and sent to me before being added to the diary.
I will contact you if I am going to be later than 5 minutes for your lesson. Lost time will be added to the end of the lesson if possible, or to another lesson later. If you are late, that time will be lost. If I attend your home and you have not arrived after 5 minutes I will send a text reminder; after 15 minutes with no response I will assume you are not attending and the full lesson will be invoiced. Any lessons not confirmed by text will not be added to the diary. If you fail to communicate 3 times you will be removed from the school register.
I will give you notice of holidays or days when I am unavailable. Please ensure you do likewise. Be sure to book your first lesson after your holiday or break to retain your place on the diary and maintain progress.
I abide by the Voluntary Code of Practice agreed between DVSA and the main bodies representing Approved Driving Instructors. Complaints should be made in the first instance to John Nicholson Driving School. Failing agreement, reference may be made to DVSA’s Registrar of Approved Driving Instructors. By taking driving lessons with John Nicholson Driving School it is accepted that you have read and agree to these terms.
